In the past the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with creationists, afraid that doing so could give the movement more credibility. But silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been campaigning to get rid of textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes or even complete genomes. Over many generations, these changes can lead to the emergence new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which describes the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantageous characteristics. In time, this disparity in reproduction can result in the creation of completely new species.

The term "evolution" originates from Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has changed, both in science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that existing species change into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the process that drives the most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as increases in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise can't be considered to be examples of evolution since they're not inherited by future generations.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They claim that the theory shouldn't be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of references about the evolutionary origins for humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dino believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?

Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is one of the fundamentals of biology, and aids scientists discover how living things operate and develop. Evolution also demonstrates how different species are connected. Scientists study evolution to better comprehend nature and make important discoveries, such as the development of new treatments.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe and life on Earth, and it has been rigorously tested and confirmed over a long period of time. The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support are diverse. Certain scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries for example, such as the development of medications and other treatments, while others are driven by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, generally for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are simply curious, whereas others have an intense faith in God.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Although Creationists may not all be Christian, they are a majority. Creationists are usually divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The most common type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the way described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were created just recently.

OECs are not as well-known however they're just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require a miracle, and that the scientists who founded modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and also special creation and consider their views to be "theistic evolution.” This is sometimes also called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." The theory says that God creates original species and then allows these to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and then slowly evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating living cannot come from non-living matter.

In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are however more flexible and permit both creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of the concept of the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove references to evolution from their books. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. STR claims to have the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that a majority of them didn't believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective. It sparked interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science in major seminaries too. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
